Battletech Live

Online, Turn-Based Battletech – Development Logs

Battletech Live is the child project of Charles R. Shoults, a Creative department System Administrator in Sidney, Nebraska.  The project came about one day in 2006 during a chat session with an old friend in Oklahoma City.  Chris Butler and Charles Shoults were friends and former roommates and discussion moved toward finding a way to play the table top Battletech game even though High School friends now lived in different states.

Development began using Visual Studio 2005 from Microsoft and written for Visual Studio. was created, hosted by and widely-used discussion forum was created for all persons involved to keep contact and share ideas.  Progress was made up to the point of having a working map, on which a 2D marker could be moved around and the range between hexes determined.  However, the project was eventually suspended, in part due to frustration over the limitations of the platform and also to the destruction of Jatol and the disappearance of it’s owner.  Now, without a home, the developer and creative consultants went into theory mode all wanted a way to remove the operating system from the equation.  Relying on .NET Framework and problematic updates just didn’t work.  A way needed to be found to open up the idea to Linux and Mac users as well as having an Internet-connected application for low-bandwidth environments.

  3. Just ran across this site and trying to open I see the Table of Contents on the left, but that is all. Is this site / project still active?

  4. The project is still active, but slow. I just got back from a ski trip and am somewhat broken. I’m developing against a linux server in my closet and then publishing in chunks. I am right now, working on Construction Tools – BattleMechs. I could probably have it done with a week of dedicated work, but I also have a full-time job.

  5. Thanks for the update. Wasn’t sure if I was having issues on running the site or if it just wasn’t yet operational. Sorry to hear about the “somewhat broken”, and hope you heal quickly.
